Look who’s sleeping in a “Big Boy Bed!”
We put the bed together yesterday while Morgan was at preschool–and surpised him when he got home. I’ve been worried that it all might be too much too soon with the potty training happening at the same time. Still, with a baby on the way in 3 months, we wanted Morgan to feel settled into some sort of routine beforehand and not feel like he was being kicked out of his crib.
Jeremy and I honestly did not expect him to sleep in it the first night–we removed his rocker from the room and put the crib on one side and the bed on the other.
He was so excited! He’s been playing with the new pillows–even sleeping with his frog pillow sham the first night that it arrived. We hopped into bed and read stories and let him get used to things–pointing out the new animals on his sheets (hooray! there are puffins–he loves them from watching Diego and says “Waddle Waddle Waddle)
That night, Morgan asked to go to bed at 7pm, an hour early. J and I took him in and he wanted to get into the big boy bed. We read 3 stories and had milk–then he said he wanted to get out….so we let him go back to the living room until his bed time at 8pm.
The second time he came a bit unglued. We explained that he could sleep in his crib if he wanted–even moving the new pillows. He went back and forth…clearly torn between the familiar and the exciting unknown. We put him in the crib and he howled until his dad went back in and held him on the new bed for a long time. J got him tucked into the new bed and he actually stayed there until 7am. I could not believe it! We kept the door to our room open all night and I snuck in once to get a peek–but my sweet guy was sound asleep in the middle of his new bed. No falling out…no getting up. Clearly not what we were expecting!
This morning I heard his little voice on the monitor saying “Daddy wake up!” and when I went into his room he was still sitting in the barely ruffled blankets. I’m so proud of him!
We haven’t decided yet if the kiddos will share a room–so the crib is staying with Morgan for now. I plan to keep the newborn in our room–either in a co-sleeper or mini crib for the first 6months–so we have some time to decide. We have 4 bedrooms (with one being used as an office and one guest room), but really want a place for guests to have privacy. Not sure what will happen there. I would hate for a little one to disturb Morgan’s rest, so we might convert the guest room into a nursery eventually.
I never shared a room as a kid, being an only child until I was about 13-14. It sort of made me set in my ways and dead set on privacy. I think it would be a great experience to have a sibling close in age and to learn to compromise and share by being in the same room while they are young. On the other hand…at 3 years apart…it might be too much of an age difference. When we move in 3 years, there will be plenty of time to have separate rooms. I would love to hear other’s experiences–What do you think?
